KC hospital in-reach

We provide in-reach services for patients in acute and intensive psychiatric care using an innovative "sound system" model which combines DJ-ing, singing, rhyming, and music in structured workshop sessions.

Facilitated by specially trained DJ's and musicians, with support from an occupational therapist, the workshop offers an accessible and energising mix of soul, r'n'b, reggae, dubstep, hip hop, rock and anything in between!

Patients are supported and encouraged to step up to the mic, have a go mixing on the decks, play along on keyboards, guitar or percussion, or simply enjoy the sounds.

The objectives are based around social inclusion and recovery and include:

• Opportunity to develop / re-engage in a leisure interest
• Chance to spend time with others who have a common interest in music
• Development of vocal, DJ-ing or musical skills
• Encouragement to make choices, develop concentration and self-expression
• Develop ability to take turns and respect the views and tastes of others
• Space to foster hope and aspirations for the future
• Potential to progress to our Key Changes service after discharge from hospital

A debrief after each session reviews clinical feedback and monitors attendance and equal opportunities. It is also included in patient satisfaction surveys.

The service offers an effective therapeutic activity for patients who are significantly medicated and experiencing mental distress. It was specifically designed to engage hard-to-reach young BME patients who may not respond to conventional therapies, although it is appropriate for all ages and backgrounds.

We currently provide services at hospitals in North and South London and work with patients from Highgate Mental Health Centre, St. Pancras Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital, Lambeth Hospital and The Maudsley Hospital.
